ROPPONGI STATION ENTRANCE
2007
Tokyo, Japan
Part of the Tokyo Midtown Project, the renovation of Roppongi subway station was a significant urban interface within the development. Preserving its existing column and beam structure was a prerequisite which provided interesting constraints for the project. In response to this, the south and north side elevations are glazed with polarized films at different transparencies reflecting the speed of staircase and escalator users, creating a visual effect to the pedestrians who pass by while masking the weight of the existing structure. The roof features an aluminum panel finish, ensuring its attractiveness not only from the street but from the surrounding buildings.
