NINONI YAESU NAKADORI

2021

Tokyo, Japan

This two-story commercial building sits on a narrow plot of land facing both Yaesu Naka-dori and a ward road leading to the Nihonbashi Takashimaya arcade. With its demolition already scheduled within 10 years, the design needed to minimize both costs and construction time.

Given the high visibility of the corner location, the building was conceived as a unified mass, with the intention of symbolically expressing its form. Both facades are treated consistently, irrespective of the levels or the streets they face, featuring large openings arranged in a rhythmic pattern. The exterior walls were purposefully kept simple and understated, serving as a backdrop so that the internal contents and the activities of the occupants would define the building’s identity and contribute to the character and the vibrancy of the surrounding area. Furthermore, signage spaces were integrated into the architecture, balancing the tenants' individual expressions with the overall unity of the design.

In response to the new social needs brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, a small takeout window was added to the first floor, facing Yaesu Naka-dori.
