SMART HOME POC-01

2022

Saitama, Japan

A renovation project of a 40-year-old house into a smart home. This project was initiated as the first Proof of Concept to renovate and transform vacant houses into smart homes and offer a new living experience through a subscription-based housing model. Since an employee of the client company is expected to live in the house as a monitor to develop the model further, we developed the design in parallel with ensuring future adaptability, creating the design system, and experimenting with implemented equipment and services.

While keeping the existing envelopes and structural frameworks, the interior was entirely updated. This remodeling process improved structural and thermal performance and reconfigured the layout (e.g., merging the living, dining, and kitchen areas into a spacious, continuous space) to meet contemporary needs.

For interior design, multiple standardized combinations of finishes were developed and applied to each room according to desired styles, keeping in mind future applications of the design system. The exposed original columns and beams highlighted the contrast between old and new materials, emphasizing the distinctive charm of renovation.
